Why apply to MSC ALOT?
MSC ALOT is a freshman leadership organization within the Memorial Student Center. It is the oldest and largest FLO. The purpose of MSC ALOT is to develop student leaders through opportunities for leadership and enrichment through programming. MSC ALOT is composed of five programming subcommittees, allowing members to serve the organization, campus, and community through hands-on experience and leadership opportunities. MSC ALOT also splits freshmen members into “families,” consisting of about 8 other freshmen and two sophomore Group Leaders. These families will have weekly hangouts together, giving freshmen many opportunities to grow and bond throughout the year. Members of MSC ALOT have gone on to serve as MSC Presidents; MSC committee chairs; MSC Executive Vice Presidents of Programs; MSC Vice Presidents of Programs and Business; Executive Vice President in SGA; and many more leadership positions across campus.
To provide a glimpse into what the experience of being in ASSIST looks like, the FLO’s Student Leaders completed an assessment of their previous year. The following should be used as information to help you make an informed decision about being a member of AFC, but please note that your experience may look different.
What does a “week in MSC ALOT” look like?
Sunday evening: Subcommittee meeting (1 hour mandatory);
Wednesday evening: General Committee Meeting – all of MSC ALOT (1 hour mandatory);
Family Hangouts (2-5 hours optional);
Hanging out in the Student Programs Office (always optional but available any time throughout the day)
What did the remote experience look like due to COVID-19?
Through the remote experience in the spring semester, we continued to hold our ordinary events, such as General Committee Meetings, subcommittee meetings, banquet, and family hangouts. We also were able to adapt to the situation and continue putting on programs, such as our virtual TEDxTAMU Salon series, which has reached over 4,000 views already; Mr. FLO; and a Q&A-style program called Ask an Athlete, connecting TAMU sports fans to coaches and athletes to see what they are up to.
A list of resources for academics, food, internet, accessibility, and more was sent out to all MSC ALOT members to ensure they had the tools they needed to succeed in this virtual format. Group Leaders and Executives were able to provide guidance in the form of Zoom instructions, study tips, and encouraging words. As mentioned previously, we still held our annual banquet over Zoom and recognized our members for their contributions to the organization this year. Our advisor, Kendall Walker, helped us all throughout the process and ensured that we were all able to excel despite the circumstances.

Does MSC ALOT have a Big/Little Program? Yes
What does the Big/Little Experience entail?
Freshmen will be paired with a “Big,” who is a former member of MSC ALOT, based on academic major or college. These Bigs will serve as academic and personal mentors for freshmen. The goal of our Big/Little program is to connect freshmen with another upperclassman who will be able to give advice regarding classes, study habits, resources, etc. These Bigs also serve a social role by being there for the freshmen and hanging out in the Student Program Office (SPO).
